To reach my ELL, I have been really focusing on vocabulary. We have a word wall with words, definitions, and pictures. Each student played a part in creating the word wall. I have also been doing a lot more partner and small group work.

I like to use lots of picture icons around the room for my kindergartners. At our school, we have a program called WRITING WITH SYMBOLS that allows you to type in any word or subject and it will show that word with a picture that goes along with it. I use it for our daily schedule, simple directions (color, cut, and paste), and to label items around the room (door, sink, bathroom, etc.). The students have become so familiar with the icons that it also promotes reading. Although time consuming to put together in the beginning, I have really found the picture icons useful.
