Gosh, if you could see my bookcases, you would see what a hard question this is to answer! I find it especially interesting that you make a distinction between a book to be marooned with and a favorite book. When I think about it, it makes sense. I have many favorite books, but what would I want to be marooned with? A book that makes me laugh? A book that motivates me? Maybe both? I am the most indecisive person ever, so here's more than one book!

1. A funny book--definitely someting by Bill Bryson.
2. A motivating book--probably Lives on the Boundary by Mike Rose.
3. A funny/motivating book--Teacher Man by Frank McCourt.

Oh, crap. I just thought of more...what about Drinking the Rain by Alix Kates Shulman? or The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien? or Fresh Air Fiend by Paul Theroux.


This is a horrible question for an English teacher to have to answer! :P

I would bring _Writing New York: A Literary Anthology_ edited by Phillip Lopate. Weighing in at 1050 pages, it would provide quite a bit of reading, and would be large enough to squash large cockroaches, should any be on the island.

The book contains full text and excerpts about New York City from authors that include Washington Irving, Edgar Allan Poe, James Weldon Johnson, E.L. Doctorow.

I would not consider this to be my favorite book, _Dreamland_ by Kevin Baker.
